comic time! this is page one of what I’m currently expecting will be a two-parter. we got more philosophical musings in the house tonight :3
on a behind-the-scenes note, I’m really glad I’ve switched to posting every-other-week for now! one of my gerbil co-authors is in a bad way health-wise this weekend, and I would’ve ended up late on this week’s page because of it, but instead I’ve already got a page finished and ready to post. it’s very nice <3
.
transcript:
lately I’ve been having lots of conversations about big ethical questions!
“what responsibilities do adults have to discipline children in our care, versus stepping back and letting them learn through the negative natural consequences of their actions?”
“what role should anger play in creating a just society?”
“if you were in Animorphs, would you boil the Yeerk pool?”
[a Yeerk, a slug-like parasitic mind-controlling alien being from K.A. Applegate’s book series Animorphs, implores the reader, “plz don’t boil me, I just want ur brain”]
I’ve been realizing that currently I don’t really believe in objective ethical rights and wrongs — I tend to think of things as good or bad only in relation to any given person’s personal tier list of values, and I don’t think ranking values is something you can really do “incorrectly”
stick figure person a: “I highly value being kind to other animals and living in environmentally sustainable ways, so I don’t eat meat!“
stick figure person b: “I highly value exploring human cultural diversity and delighting in joyful sensory experiences, so I frequently eat all sorts of meat!“
Blobic, sitting on the ground between them and giving a thumbs-up: “both of these perspectives are real and okay!”
to be continued!
