12: they’ve got names now!!

september 30th, 2024

I’m starting to give the characters besides Blobic distinct names and personalities and the like! the canine one is Abby — in keeping with the silly naming scheme, it’s short for Abecedario — and I’m thinking the long-snooted one is giving Chris vibes for now.

Abby has previously been seen as the GM on page two (“goo-oo-oo-oo”) and as one of the young ubran-explore-ing friends on page nine (“on reasonable roof risk”)! originally Chris was intended to be the hexagon character from page six (“druuuugs”), but I realized during the first draft of this page that it’s rather difficult to give a hexagon expressive poses, so they’ve gotten a redesign that I’m super happy with! it clicked with me as I’m posting this that their design is likely subconsciously inspired by the titular characters in Toivo Kaartinen’s comic “Foxes in Love,” which I heartily recommend 😀

on another note, in a life-imitating-art moment a few days after drafting this page, I was given the opportunity to stick my head into a university building ceiling, and I did confirm that if I were a midsized anthropomorphic dog I would probably be able to hang out up there without falling, which was very fun

transcript:

[ a visually new character walks into a classroom-esque room, waving to Blobic, who’s sitting at a table ]
Chris: heyyy!
Blobic: hi!!
Chris: what’re you up to?
Blobic: working on my comic!
Chris: nice!

[ Chris leans over Blobic’s shoulder in a cuddly way, peering at the comic page in progress ]
Chris: will I ever be in your comic?
Blobic: maybe! right now I don’t really have many characters besides the protagonist, but I’m working on branching out

Blobic: so far I’ve been doing a lot of narration, which is fun in its own way, but I do wanna practice writing plot and characterization and things through, like, diegetic dialogue! without needing to rely on a mysterious voice from above
Chris: ic ic

typical narration text at top of panel: waowwwww, we’ve been through so much together and you’re gonna ditch me just like that
Chris, jolting back in their seat and looking upwards with a bewildered expression: WHUH–

[ Abby now emerges from the classroom ceiling, sticking hir head out of a missing tile and laughing an upside-down “hehehe” to hirself. Chris is flopped on the table with a smile, closed eyes, and a skull emoji emanating from their head, while Blobic pats their snoot with a sympathetic and/or apologetic expression. ]
Blobic: Abby found a loose ceiling tile earlier and wanted to see if zie could surprise you
Chris: guhhh… mission successful
